Outline
WHITESTONE Gallery Karuizawa will be hosting a solo exhibition by artist itabamoe titled "MOODS".
After graduating from Bunka Fashion College's Apparel Design Department, itabamoe worked in the fashion industry, handling apparel design, advertising and web design for her own brand, before transitioning to advertising as an illustrator in 2015. She has worked on magazine illustrations and collaborative product packaging.
She began her career as an artist in 2021. She consistently focuses on the theme of "contemporary femininity," depicting the lives, values, and aesthetics of women living in their time through illustration-based expression.
Drawing on the perspective cultivated in the world of advertising and illustration, she develops it into contemporary art, taking everyday elements such as clothing, gestures, and facial expressions—elements that have often been considered background—as the subject of her work, and continues to question the diverse forms of "femininity" and "a beautiful woman."
The exhibition concept is as follows:
The "NEO MOOD" series marks the beginning of a yet-to-be-named sensation.
By blending traditional Japanese designs and aesthetics with contemporary sensibilities, and intersecting them with images of modern women, this work depicts a quiet tension where beauty, transience, and strength coexist, exploring new character portrayals that are not bound by specific eras or narratives.
In this exhibition, the "NEO MOOD" series is divided into two spaces: one presents a world of vibrant colors, while the other showcases a monochrome world stripped of color.
Color gives people warmth and emotion, and sometimes guides their impression and story.
On the other hand, by removing color, the very essence of the subject—its outline, gaze, and demeanor—stands out more quietly.
Color and achromaticity. Present and past. Beauty and transience. Serenity and strength.
Between seemingly contradictory things, there exist ambiguous emotions and nuances that cannot be clearly put into words.
The title "MOODS" embodies the idea of the diverse presences of women, not being confined to a single image or emotion.
As you move between the two spaces, the impression of the depicted women will overlap with the viewer's own memories and feelings, and will change into something different for each individual.
This exhibition encourages you to experience unnamed sensations as your own unique "MOOD." Through this experience, it will help create a new persona within each individual.

Artist Information
itabamoe
A contemporary artist based in Tokyo. A graduate of Bunka Fashion College, she worked as an apparel designer before transitioning to the advertising industry as an illustrator. She began her career as an artist in 2021.Drawing on and evolving the diverse approaches to portraying women cultivated in the advertising industry, itabamoe has reconstructed illustration as a subject in contemporary art. She has consistently conveyed the multifaceted image of the "ideal woman" that changes with the times in real time. The process by which the details of everyday life, which were buried as background in advertising, gain their place as the subject on the canvas, links not only to the 20th-century socio-cultural trend of redefining marginality (gender/race/third world) but also to the artist's own journey. Itabamoe's pop and visually expressive style appears to be a straightforward reflection of the social media age where everyone can be the protagonist, while powerfully affirming the virtues that constitute the beliefs and ways of life inherent in each individual.
