Born in Anhui Province, China in 1960. After studying printmaking at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, and working in New York, she is currently based in Beijing.
Bao Pei's artistic style is a reflection of her rich life experiences. For many years, she primarily worked with oil paints, but one day, encountering the texture of handmade paper and the scent of paints awakened memories of woodblock printing, which she had studied in the past.
She switches from her brush to a carving knife, carves the wooden board, applies color, and sometimes destroys what she has just created—repeating this process many times. By combining printmaking techniques with the texture of oil paint, she creates her own unique "mixed media" works.
At the heart of my work is the process of recording my own emotions in words and then translating them into the act of painting. The complex layers of colors and shapes maintain a delicate balance between the explosion of uncontrollable emotions and the self-control that calmly observes them.
Her works are held in the collections of the National Art Museum of China and museums around the world. Please enjoy the powerful yet delicate world of expression that she arrived at after grappling with materials and 10 years of trial and error.
