Zhang Miao, who studied printmaking at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and now teaches there, is an artist who is pioneering new possibilities in contemporary woodblock printing.
Her creative style is extremely unique. First, she meticulously applies more than 20 layers of color to the canvas, and then, guided by the light, wind, and atmosphere of the day, she carves away each layer with a carving tool. Going beyond the boundaries of two-dimensional printmaking, she creates a "three-dimensional universe" where time and color intertwine.
Her creative process, which draws inspiration from Eastern philosophy and spiritual practices, is also a process of introspection, exploring the mysteries of life and the cycles of nature. Whether depicting landscapes or abstract forms, her works are imbued with a sense of expansiveness in time and space, and a powerful life energy.
